What is sodium chlorite made of?

For preparing NaClO2, at first sodium chlorate reduce in strong acid to chlorine dioxide. Then adsorbed with a solution of aqueous sodium hydroxide and by using another reducing agent convert to this product.

What is sodium chlorite used in?

NaClO2 is one of the most widely used materials in today’s industrial society, which we will discuss some applications of this material below.

  • To generate chlorine dioxide for bleaching of textiles, pulp, and paper.
  • As water treatment and purification, after shifting to chlorine dioxide used for disinfection urban water treatment plants.
  • for disinfecting water used to wash fruits, vegetables, and poultry.
  • for sanitizing air ducts and animal containment areas (walls, floors, and other surfaces).
  • Sometimes in combination with zinc chloride used as a component in therapeutic rinses, mouthwashes, toothpaste and gels, mouth sprays, as a preservative in eye drops, and in contact lens cleaning solution.
  • Using in water treatment plants as a sterilizing agent.

Safety information:

Using NaClO2 is unsafe for extended periods of time or in larger dosages and have side effects that mention below:

  • lowered blood pressure
  • dehydration
